About This Tool

Ash is an AI companion built from the ground up for mental health by Slingshot AI. Rather than a general-purpose chatbot, it is trained on a large-scale proprietary dataset of expert mental-health knowledge and draws on therapeutic frameworks such as CBT, DBT and ACT. Ash listens to stress, anxiety, relationships and everyday struggles, surfaces patterns across your thoughts, feelings and behaviors, and offers text or voice support 24/7 with weekly personalized insights. It explicitly states it is not a replacement for professional care and directs users in crisis to human help.

Background

Ash is built by Slingshot AI (founded 2022, London, ~$93M raised) as an AI companion 'designed from the ground up for mental health.' It targets stress, anxiety, relationships and everyday emotional struggles with a private, judgment-free space, emphasizing long-term growth over one-off chats.

Technology

Per the company and several reviews, Ash is trained on a large-scale proprietary dataset of expert mental-health knowledge rather than general web text; its dialogue draws on evidence-based frameworks like CBT, DBT and ACT and personalizes via reinforcement learning, with clinical advisors including former NIH mental-health director Thomas Insel.

Market

A self-help mental-health companion for global English-speaking users; as of 2026 it reports ~250K people helped and 15.7M messages sent. It is free during beta, with a subscription tier planned. App Store rating ~4.8.

Best For

People who want low-barrier, anytime emotional supportThose on therapy waitlists or blocked by cost or stigmaAnyone using conversation for self-awareness and reflective growthUsers who prefer voice venting and value long-term memory continuity

Editorial Note

Ash is one of the rare AI companions genuinely built for mental health rather than retrofitted from a general chatbot; its evidence-based frameworks, long-term memory and weekly insights are real strengths. But it explicitly does not handle crises, its evidence base is early, and the free beta may eventually cost money.

Strengths

+ Purpose-built for mental health, not a general bot in disguise
+ Evidence-based CBT/DBT/ACT frameworks with clinical advisors
+ Therapeutic memory across months/years plus weekly insights
+ Private, judgment-free, available 24/7 with a low barrier

Drawbacks

− Not for crises; emergencies must route to human help
− Early and contested efficacy evidence; active regulatory scrutiny
− Currently free; a paid subscription may arrive later
− Primarily English and mobile-first

Value Assessment：As a low-cost aid for everyday stress and self-awareness, Ash is a seriously built mental-health product among peers; but it is a support and self-help tool, not a replacement for professional care.
